DAMLA
Daphne A Moote Learning Academy
SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS for all ages
About DAMLA
DAMLA offers summer creative workshops for multi-age children. This educational idea in progress maintains that learning through the performing arts enhances academic achievement, accelerates personal development and self-image, while promoting camaraderie and teamwork.
Academy founder, and artistic director, Akani Fletcher, along with co-director, Daphne A. Moote, have trained hundreds of students in grades K-7. Their ongoing educational research has fashioned a curriculum that is both challenging and fun. In addition to daily cooking experiences, innovative science projects, creative media, and a lot of encouragement, each summer series culminates in the performance of an original children's play written and directed by Akani.
DAMLA is a non-profit organization. Please consider a tax deductible donation to our Scholarship Fund to assist deserving students otherwise not able to participate. For credit card donations, please call S.E.E. at (818) 225-9150, and specify DAMLA.
Students in DAMLA participate in a variety of activities emphasizing their creative talents. Students cook, learn scientific principles through hands-on experiments, and participate in Dynamic Council™ to develop awareness and self confidence. The goal is fun while learning; all done in a relaxed, non-threatening environment.
Daphne Moote
Daphne Moote is a distinguished educator and advocate with a remarkable career spanning 37 years. A graduate of the University of Southern California with a Bachelor's degree and a Master's in Education from CSU Dominguez Hills, she is a National Board Certified Teacher specializing as an Early Childhood Generalist. Moote is a passionate advocate of public education, having served as President of the
El Segundo Teachers Union and an active member of the El Segundo PTA Council for 15 years.
Moote's contributions to education have been widely recognized. She has received multiple awards from
El Segundo PTA, including the prestigious Eagle Award, and was honored by her peers as Center Street Teacher of the Year. She is also a three-time recipient of the California Teachers Association WHO Award at both local and state levels. Her efforts in revitalizing the Elementary After School Day Care Staff, including implementing staff training programs, significantly enhanced the quality of care and education in the district. Her behind-the-scenes work helped make the El Segundo School District, and Center Street in particular, recognized institutions of academic excellence.
In 1990, Moote co-founded the Daphne A. Moote Learning Academy (DAMLA), a popular summer education nonprofit. The academy's curriculum focuses on learning through the creative arts, blending her expertise in curriculum development. Her many years as an Education Through Music (ETM) devotee add a special quality to the summer workshop experience. This approach enhances learning and creates joyful experiences through song and experiential games.
However, it is in the classroom, helping to develop new learners, where Moote finds her greatest joy. To this day, she hears from students who go back many years, and she marvels at the occasions when now adult former kindergarten students enroll their own children in her Center Street kindergarten class. Her social media accounts abound with photos, notes, and remembrances from both current and past students and their families, a testament to the lasting impact she has made in their lives.
